Also known as Harşena Castle, Amasya Castle stands on the rock forming Mount Harşena, which rises above the city; the rock is 700 metres above sea level and 300 metres above the Yeşilırmak river. Some historians attribute its construction to the Pontic king Mithridates. It is reached on foot past the rock tombs of the kings, and offers a wide view over the city and the Yeşilırmak valley.
