Lake Aktaş is a shallow tectonic lake on a high plateau on the Turkey-Georgia border; 1,400 hectares of its 2,700-hectare surface, along with twelve islands, lie within Turkey. The lake is fed by small streams and drains into the Kura River only in spring, when water levels are highest. It is an important birdwatching site, being the only wetland in Turkey where the great white pelican and the Dalmatian pelican breed together.
