Güvercinada Castle was built to protect the harbour at the mouth of the Gulf of Kuşadası. The island holds an inner keep built by Barbaros Hayreddin Pasha and walls added by İlyas Ağa during the Morean Revolt to guard against attacks from the sea. The roughly 3-metre-high walls encircle the island, and its entrance gate is flanked by two towers.
