Genç, south-west of Bingöl's centre, is a district that came under Ottoman rule after the 1473 Battle of Otlukbeli. It briefly served as a provincial centre from 1924 to 1927, was attached to Elazığ between 1927 and 1936, and became a district of Bingöl in 1936.
