Orta lies 65 km from central Çankırı; mounds from the Hittite and Phrygian periods are found here. The Devrez stream, a tributary of the Kızılırmak, rises in the mountains within the district's territory. Formerly a village attached to Şabanözü, it became a district in 1959.
