A tomb, and later a mosque, was built over the grave of Seyyid Battal Gazi by Ümmühan Hatun, mother of Alâeddin Keykubad I; a madrasa, almshouse, dervish lodge and hospice were added under the Ottomans. Rulers including Suleiman the Magnificent and Murad IV added further buildings to the complex. First a centre of the Kalenderi dervishes and later of the Bektashi order, the complex was also an important stopping point on the Istanbul-Baghdad-Hejaz route.
