With origins going back to the Müze-i Hümayun founded in the Church of Hagia Eirene in 1869, the complex consists of three main buildings. The Tiled Pavilion, built in 1472, has displayed Seljuk and Ottoman tile and ceramic works since 1880; the Archaeology Museum building, designed by Alexander Vallaury, opened in 1891 and houses finds from the Sidon royal necropolis, including the Alexander Sarcophagus. The collections hold close to a million objects.
