Built between 1463 and 1470 by Fatih Sultan Mehmed in the Kirmastı neighbourhood, the mosque takes its name from its founder. Its central dome, 26 metres across, rests on arches carried by four great piers and is supported by four half-domes. The mosque is the centrepiece of the Fatih complex, which also includes a madrasa, a hospital, a soup kitchen, a caravanserai, a bathhouse and tombs.
