The centre of chariot races and public gatherings in the Roman and Byzantine periods, the Hippodrome was known in Ottoman times as the Atmeydanı. Three ancient monuments survive on the square: the Obelisk of Theodosius, brought from Egypt, the Serpentine Column from Delphi, and the Byzantine-era Column of Constantine. The Blue Mosque and the Museum of Turkish and Islamic Arts stand around it.
