Sultangazi, on İstanbul's European side, is bordered by Eyüpsultan, Esenler, Gaziosmanpaşa and Başakşehir, and was established as a district in 2008. The Alibey Dam, built between 1975 and 1983, supplies a significant share of drinking water to the European side of the city.
