Metropolis, whose name means 'city of the mother goddess', was founded in the 3rd century BC under the Seleucid kingdom. It flourished in the Hellenistic period with grand city walls, a theatre and a temple to Ares, the god of war, and expanded down the slopes in the Roman period. Surviving remains include an atrium, a Roman house and temples to Zeus and the Twelve Gods.
