The castle in the centre of Ermenek was the defensive structure of the settlement known in Roman times as Germanikopolis. It was the first castle built by the Karamanid beylik, which made Ermenek its centre between 1256 and 1475, and it also served as a residence and dungeon. It was taken by the Ottoman commander Gedik Ahmet Pasha in 1475.
