Arpaçay takes its name from the Arpaçay River, which marks the Turkey-Armenia border here. Kuyucuk Lake in the district is a Ramsar-protected wetland known for the variety of birds on its migration route; the lake dried up in 2019-2021, and efforts to restore its water have continued in recent years.
