Akhisar district, on the İzmir-İstanbul road, is built over the ancient city of Thyateira, whose history goes back to the early Bronze Age. Known as a weaving centre, the city was also militarily and commercially important as a junction of roads. It is visited as the site of the Church of Thyateira, one of the Seven Churches of early Christianity; the remains are also known as Tepe Mezarlığı.
