Philadelphia Ancient City (Alaşehir)

The ancient city in Manisa's Alaşehir district gained importance under the Pergamene king Attalos II Philadelphos, from whom it took the name Philadelphia. Known in the Roman period as "Little Athens" for its many temples and festivals, it is also the site of the Church of Philadelphia, one of the Seven Churches of early Christianity. The city retained its importance through the Byzantine period.
