Altunhisar lies 35 km from central Niğde, within the Cappadocia region; Niğde's central district lies to its east, Bor to its south, Çiftlik to its north, Konya's Emirgazi district to its west, and it borders Aksaray province to the north-west. Known as Ortaköy in Ottoman times, the settlement was founded by Turkmen nomads of the Kayı tribe; multi-storey rock-cut dwellings can be found at Bayatönü.
