Traces of Niğde Castle's foundations go back to the 8th century BC; it was largely rebuilt in the 10th century and remained important through the Anatolian Seljuk period. The castle, made up of inner and outer walls, carries a 41-metre clock tower built in 1866 by Ziya Pasha.
