Adapazarı is Sakarya's central district and has been the province's administrative centre since 1954. Beşköprü (the Sangarios Bridge), built under the Byzantine Emperor Justinian II, is one of the district's historic structures; the city was heavily damaged in the earthquake of 17 August 1999.
