Viranşehir is a flat, plain-covered district of Şanlıurfa; its history goes back to the Sumerians, and the region passed through Hittite, Assyrian, Persian, Macedonian and Roman rule. The town was burned by Timur in 1400 and came under Ottoman rule in 1516.
