Boyabat Castle was built by the Paphlagonians in the 7th century BCE on a steep rock outcrop in the Gökırmak Valley. It bears traces of the Roman and Byzantine periods and took its present form under the Ottomans. Built to follow the natural shape of the rock, the castle also has underground passages beneath it.
