Built in 1217 by the Anatolian Seljuk Sultan Izzeddin Kayqawus I, the Şifaiye Madrasa was founded as a darüşşifa, a hospital that housed surgeons and eye doctors of its time. It was converted into a classical madrasa during the Ottoman period, and at about 3,400 square metres it is considered the largest Seljuk medical building in Anatolia.
