Gülağaç lies 33 km from central Aksaray, bordered by Nevşehir's Derinkuyu and Acıgöl districts to the east, Aksaray's Güzelyurt district to the south and Ortaköy to the north. Formerly known as Ağaçlı, the settlement became a municipality in 1957 and a district in 1990.
