Aşkale, in western Erzurum, lies 53 km from the provincial centre. Said to have been founded by the Hittites around 1700 BC, it was a strategic settlement that changed hands many times through history and came under Ottoman rule after the 1473 Battle of Otlukbeli. Today cement, gypsum and chromium plants contribute to the district's economy.
