Susuz is a district built on a valley floor at the foot of north-eastern Anatolia's highest plateaus; Arpaçay lies to its east, Göle to its west and Kars's provincial centre to its south. The area has come under the rule of many civilisations, including the Urartians, Medes, Romans, Seljuks and Ottomans. In the modern era it is known for the Cilavuz Village Institute.
