Gölcük, on the south shore of the Gulf of İzmit in Kocaeli province, is known for its natural harbour. The Gölcük Naval Shipyard, founded in 1927, is home to the Turkish Navy; the district developed as a modern town after the founding of the Republic and suffered heavy damage in the earthquake of 17 August 1999.
