Karamürsel is a district on the south shore of the Gulf of Kocaeli, between Gölcük and Yalova, founded in 1326 under Orhan Gazi by the admiral Karamürsel Alp. Its shore is known for fish restaurants and orchards of cherries, plums, peaches and olives; the distinctive "Karamürsel basket," woven with a side-strung cord, is a traditional local craft. The earthquake of 17 August 1999 killed 164 people here.
